The
East River Fish was created in the winter of 2003. Cut from about 30 large-size
tomato sauce cans and as many Coke cans, the East River Fish is the manifestation
of everything my mother told me I couldn’t touch. Conceptually,
this piece came to me while considering what types of hardy species of fauna
are able to survive in the East River. Surely, the predator at the top of
the food chain would be a demon of proportions even natural selection couldn’t
produce. The
East River fish has no friendly parts and led to the loss of about a cup
of my blood over the 2 week span of its creation. Many of the original blood
spots still dot this piece, offering a “don’t touch” warning
to viewers and a reminder to me that my mother was always right. Created:
2004
Dimensions: 3’6”l x 2’w
